Compared to Gopher and Gemini, the small web is about using existing web protocols in a small way, rather than replacing it with protocols that enforce small technology values more directly.

- The 10 KB Club, 250 KB club, and 1MB Club honor websites with small overall load sizes.
- Text-Only Websites lists websites that primarily stick with simple text.
- The Lean Web Club talks about writing JavaScript that is small, and without frameworks.
