Small Web

An effort to bring the values and benefits of Old and Small Technology to the modern Web. That is, using the existing web technologies in a way that makes the web small.

The Small Technology Foundation has been working on this and describes it.

Compared to Gopher and Gemini, the small web is about using existing web protocols in a small way, rather than replacing it with protocols that enforce small technology values more directly.

Small Web Ideas

  • Low-tech magazine has a solar-powered website, and they talk extensively about how to design a website in such a way that it requires minimal power to host.
  • The 10 KB Club, 250 KB club, and 1MB Club honor websites with small overall load sizes.
  • Text-Only Websites lists websites that primarily stick with simple text.
  • The Lean Web Club talks about writing JavaScript that is small, and without frameworks.

Old technology is any tech that’s, well… old.
